### Seconds before the swipe

In Reels / TikTok / Shorts you’ve got about **1–3**** seconds** before someone swipes. A hook isn’t clickbait at any cost. It’s a **promise** the content actually delivers on.

### Hook types that work

**Pain**

“If reach died after buying views — here’s why”

**Promise**

“In 30 seconds — a 5-hashtag formula for a post”

**Debate / myth**

“Nope, you can’t drop 30 tags on Instagram anymore”

**Result**

“From 200 to 2k in a month — what I changed in my bio”

**Intrigue with specifics**

“One mistake in your profile header leaks followers”

### What usually kills a hook

- A long “hi, my name is…”
- A pretty frame with no text/meaning
- A promise the video doesn’t keep
- A vague open: “today we’ll talk about content”

### Text on screen

Even if you’re talking — put the hook big on screen. People watch muted. They didn’t hear it = swipe.

### Honesty rule

> **Rule:** A hook can be sharp. It can’t be a lie. Saves won’t save you — trust burns first.

## Check yourself

What’s the main job of a hook in a short video?

1. Tell the author’s whole biography
2. In 1–3 seconds, give a reason to keep watching
3. Stuff the screen with as many hashtags as possible
4. Always use a trending sound

Explanation: Without early retention, nobody sees the rest. Trends and tags don’t replace a clear promise in the first seconds.
