Course URL: https://the-app.fyi/academy/short-form-video
Lessons: 5 · ~20 min
Platforms: Instagram, TikTok, Shorts

🎬 Short video is the main door for new people almost everywhere.

But “shoot vertical” ≠ a strategy. You need retention, structure, and a bridge into the profile. Otherwise it’s just pretty stats on one clip.

Let’s go 😎

## What you will learn

- What short-video algorithms actually watch
- How to build a 30–60 second clip
- How to use trends without losing your meaning
- Why on-screen text and “spoken” keywords matter
- Why a viral video can still fail to grow followers

## Skills you will gain

- Assembling a simple video framework
- Separating “views” from “account growth”

## Lessons

### Lesson 1. What the algorithm actually “likes”

[Open lesson](https://the-app.fyi/academy/short-form-video/what-algorithm-likes)

### The algorithm isn’t a fan — it’s a counter

The algorithm doesn’t “like” you personally. It maximizes the odds that the next viewer **won’t swipe** and will do something.

> It maximises the odds the next viewer **doesn’t swipe away** — and actually does something.

### Signals that beat the myths

1. **Retention** — how far they watched, where they dropped
2. **Rewatches**
3. **Saves / shares / comments** (not likes alone)
4. **Watching the key early seconds**
5. How similar the video is to what already worked for that person

### What usually isn’t a cheat code

- A secret hashtag
- Posting “only at 6:03 p.m.”
- The same sound as a millionaire account, with no meaning of your own
- Buying views

### Platform differences (very rough)

**TikTok** (from zero)

Often easier to break through from zero

**Reels** (living profile)

Leans harder on an already-alive profile + recommendations

**Shorts** (retention)

Its own ecosystem; retention and clickability matter

> **The main signal:** Takeaway: make a video people **finish**. Everything else is secondary.

**Check yourself:** Which signal usually matters most for recommendations?

1. Number of hashtags
2. Retention and meaningful actions (watch-through, saves, comments)
3. Buying views in the first hour
4. A mandatory trending sound on everything

Explanation: Platforms push what people stick with and react to.

### Lesson 2. Video structure in 30–60 seconds

[Open lesson](https://the-app.fyi/academy/short-form-video/video-structure)

### A frame instead of chaos

Chaos on set gets fixed with a frame

> Here’s a simple one for 30–60 seconds.

### The frame

1. **0–3 sec — hook** (text + promise)
2. **One-line context** — who it’s for
3. **2–4 meat points** — steps / reasons / mistakes
4. **Example** — fast, on your fingers
5. **CTA** — one action
6. **No empty ending** — don’t drag a black screen

### Timing example (45 sec)

**0–3** (hook)

Hook on screen

**3–8** (mistake)

“Here’s the mistake”

**8–35** (the meat)

Three short points

**35–42** (example)

Mini example

**42–45** (CTA)

“Save / comment X”

### Filming without a studio

- Talk shorter than feels “normal”
- Cut the pauses
- One background, phone mic — fine
- Cutaways: text, zooms, inserts — help retention

> **The seconds limit:** If the idea won’t fit in 60 seconds — cut the topic, don’t speed-talk into mush.

**Check yourself:** What should the structure open with?

1. A long hello and introduction
2. A hook with a clear promise
3. A list of all the author’s socials
4. Captions with 15 hashtags

Explanation: Structure starts with a reason to stay. You can intro briefly later — or leave it in the profile.

### Lesson 3. Sounds and trends without losing meaning

[Open lesson](https://the-app.fyi/academy/short-form-video/trends-and-sounds)

### A trend is an accelerator, not the steering wheel

> A trend is an accelerator, not the steering wheel. If you talk past your niche under a millionaire’s sound, you get someone else’s views and zero of your people.

### How to ride a trend smart

1. Get the **mechanic** (pause, gesture, cut, punchline)
2. Drop in **your** meaning / pain / offer
3. Check: will my people recognize this?
4. Don’t be totally late — but you don’t have to be first

### When to skip the trend

- It breaks your expert vibe
- It needs a cringe dance and you’re B2B consulting (sometimes irony works — often not)
- The trend is already “stale,” only copy-pastes left

### Original audio

Your own words + captions often beat borrowed audio: people find you by meaning, not by meme.

### Rule

> **Trend rule:** The trend serves **your** topic. If it’s the other way around — you’re serving someone else’s hype.

**Check yourself:** When is a trending sound useful?

1. Always — without it videos don’t get shown
2. When the trend’s mechanic amplifies your meaning and niche
3. Only if you copy the video one-to-one
4. Only for dances — experts aren’t allowed

Explanation: A trend is packaging. The video still has to be about you and your audience.

### Lesson 4. Text on screen and words out loud

[Open lesson](https://the-app.fyi/academy/short-form-video/on-screen-text-and-seo)

### No sound, no Google

Lots of people watch **muted**. Even more search for answers inside TikTok / Instagram / YouTube — not Google.

### Two layers of “findability”

1. **On screen** — big hook and key phrases
2. **Out loud** — the same words: “how to build Instagram hashtags,” “why you shouldn’t buy engagement”

Plus a normal-language caption — not emoji only.

### Practical rules

- The hook reads on a phone in a fraction of a second
- Not a wall of text — short chunks
- Captions: auto is fine, but fix names and terms
- In the description — 1–2 query-style phrases, like a viewer would search

### Hashtags here

> **Tags don’t replace words:** 3–5 on topic. They don’t replace spoken and on-screen words. They support them.

**Check yourself:** What helps a video get found on topic most?

1. Only `#fyp`
2. Key phrases on screen, in speech, and in the caption
3. A silent video with no text
4. 30 hidden tags in a comment

Explanation: Search and recommendations lean on clear content language. Empty tags and silence without captions don’t explain the topic.

### Lesson 5. Views without follows

[Open lesson](https://the-app.fyi/academy/short-form-video/views-without-follows)

### Lots of eyes, few follows

Classic: 100k views, +40 follows. Painful. But logical.

> Annoying. But logical.

### Why it happens

**Content “for everyone”**

Random people liked it, not yours

**Strong video, weak profile**

They opened it — didn’t get why follow

**No bridge**

The video is self-contained — “I already got everything”

**Clickbait**

They finished out of spite/curiosity and left

**One-off entertainment**

They laughed — and moved on

### What to fix

1. End of the video — a **reason to follow** (“every Tue I break down reach mistakes”)
2. Profile and pinned posts = continuation of the promise
3. Series, not one-off flashes
4. Traffic into Stories / the next video / a saved guide

### Normal math

Not every view needs to become a follow. But if the ratio is consistently tiny — fix the storefront and offer, not just “go more viral.”

> **Without a strategy:** Virality without strategy = renting someone else’s attention for one night.

**Check yourself:** What most often fixes “lots of views → few follows”?

1. Buying even more views
2. A clear offer in the video + a strong profile and next step
3. Deleting all hashtags
4. Quitting short video entirely

Explanation: Views get people to the door. A follow happens when it’s clear why stay — and the profile backs that up.
