👋 Cool — myths are out of the way. Now it's practice time.

Not “what hashtags exist in the universe,” but **which ones to put under this post right now** — and how not to slide back into eternal copy-paste.

Let's go 😎

## What you will learn

- How to pick a set of five hashtags for one specific post
- When geotags help — and when they're useless
- How a Reels set differs from a feed post
- How to rotate tags without reinventing everything from scratch
- A pre-publish checklist

## Skills you will gain

- Building a set in a minute with a simple framework
- Not confusing “popular tag” with “right tag”

## Lessons

### Lesson 1. The set formula for one post

[Open lesson](https://the-app.fyi/academy/working-hashtag-sets/set-formula)

### A set for this post

Forget the “universal list for every occasion.” A set is built **for a specific post**. On Instagram you get a max of **5** slots — so each one has to earn its place.

### The 5-slot framework

Fill them in order. An empty slot beats junk.

**Slot 1** (Niche / community)

`#homeworkout`

**Slot 2** (Post topic)

`#athomeworkouts`

**Slot 3** (Detail (angle, level, format))

`#15minuteworkout`

**Slot 4** (Format or geo)

Examples: **Format or geo** — only if it's truly about that. `#reels` or `#austinfitness`

**Slot 5** (One broad tag — max)

`#fitness`

> No honest geo or format? Slot 4 becomes another mid/narrow topic tag. Don't pad with `#viral`.

### Mini algorithm in 60 seconds

1. In one sentence: **what is this post about?**
2. Write down 8–10 candidates.
3. Cross out anything that isn't about *this* content.
4. Keep 3–5. Done.

### TikTok / Shorts

Same logic: **3–5**, niche + topic. No empty `#fyp #foryou #viral` filler.

**Check yourself:** What's the right way to start a set?

1. With the five most popular tags on Earth
2. With the niche and topic of this exact post
3. With the same block as yesterday
4. With `#fyp`, then meaning later

Explanation: Slots are limited. First describe the post, then — at most one broad tag. Popularity without relevance is almost useless.

### Lesson 2. Geotags: when yes, when no

[Open lesson](https://the-app.fyi/academy/working-hashtag-sets/geotags)

### The “I’m here” signal

A geotag isn't decoration. It's a signal: “my content is useful for people **here**.”

### When a geotag slaps

- Offline service: salon, café, photographer, trainer in a city
- Local event, place, “where to shoot / where to go”
- Content clearly about a neighborhood, city, or country as the topic

> Example: nails in Austin → `#austinnails`, `#austinbeauty` make sense.

### When a geotag is almost useless

- You're an online expert “for everyone” with no place attached
- The post isn't about location at all (just “eh, throw in New York”)
- Geo eats a slot that a narrow topic tag would use better

> If your audience is in different cities and the post is about a skill, not a place — geo is often extra.

### Instagram: location ≠ hashtag

In a post you can tag a **place** (location) separately from hashtags. Different things:

- **Location** — a map pin / place
- **Geotag** — a text `#austin` in the caption

> Sometimes one location + topic tags is enough — no `#city` in your five.

### The rule

> **Geo rule:** Add geo only if someone from that place would say: “oh, this is about me / my city.”

**Check yourself:** When is a geotag usually most useful?

1. Always — it never hurts
2. When the content or service is truly tied to a place
3. Only on TikTok; geo doesn't work on Instagram
4. Instead of niche tags, to “reach wider”

Explanation: Geo boosts local search and community. On global expert content with no place tie-in, it often just burns a slot.

### Lesson 3. Tags for Reels vs. feed posts

[Open lesson](https://the-app.fyi/academy/working-hashtag-sets/reels-vs-feed)

### Different format — different set

Same account — different formats. The hashtag set can differ too. Not because of “Reels magic,” but because of **different context**.

### Feed post (photo / carousel)

More often about:

- topic and value (“save this checklist”)
- niche and interest-based search
- sometimes a brand / series

> Tags: niche + topic + detail. A format `#carousel` almost never helps.

### Reels / TikTok / Shorts

Short video often rides recommendations, but tags still:

- help **classify** the topic
- work in search
- hint what the clip is about

> A format slot only makes sense **if it actually helps** (e.g. a Reels community in your niche). Blindly slapping `#reels` on everything is weak.

### What beats tags in video

**On-screen** text, the first words out loud, a caption with real phrases — often stronger than any hashtag. Tags are a top layer, not the foundation.

### Practical split

**Carousel guide**

Topic + “how to” + niche

**Reels hook**

Niche + the clip’s specific story

**Aesthetic / photo**

Niche + style / genre

> **Don’t copy from the feed:** Don't copy your carousel five onto a Reel “because lazy.” Thirty seconds to rebuild pays off.

**Check yourself:** Why might a Reels set differ from a feed post?

1. Reels don't need tags at all
2. Formats have different context and angle — tags should match the clip
3. Reels always need exactly five `#fyp` tags
4. Feed allows 30, Reels only 5

Explanation: Tags describe specific content. A Reel and a carousel often hit a different angle — refresh the set for it. On Instagram the limit is 5 for posts in general.

### Lesson 4. Rotation: a pool instead of one list

[Open lesson](https://the-app.fyi/academy/working-hashtag-sets/rotation)

### A pool, not copy-paste

Rotation isn't “invent five brand-new tags out of thin air every day.” It's a **pool** and a pick from it.

### How to build a pool

Collect 30–60 solid tags for your niche. Sort into buckets:

- narrow
- mid
- broad (few — about 5–8 for the whole pool)
- geo (if you need it)
- for common formats / series

> For each post, pull a **fresh five** (or 3–4).

### The refresh rule

> **Rule:** From post to post, change at least **30–50%** of the set.
Not all five have to move — but don't reuse the exact same block byte-for-byte.

### Life hack without 40 spreadsheet tabs

- Notes / favorites: 3–4 ready “skeletons” for post types (teach / personal / product)
- Before publishing, swap 2 tags for today's angle
- Every 2–4 weeks, clean the pool: dead and irrelevant — out

### What not to do

- One “golden” list for a year
- Rotation for rotation's sake: `#random1` instead of meaning
- 10 near-duplicates (`#run` `#running` `#iloverunning`) — pick one strong tag

> **Pool as a wardrobe:** Pool = wardrobe. Set for a post = outfit of the day. Don't wear the same thing every day.

**Check yourself:** What is healthy rotation?

1. A fully new tag language from scratch every day
2. A niche pool + a fresh pick per post with partial swaps
3. One fixed block of 5 forever — more stable that way
4. Alternating a week with tags and a week without

Explanation: The pool saves time; picking per post keeps relevance. Eternal copy-paste of one block is an antipattern.

### Lesson 5. Pre-publish checklist

[Open lesson](https://the-app.fyi/academy/working-hashtag-sets/pre-publish-checklist)

### 40 seconds before you post

Before you hit share — 40 seconds of checklist. Boring. Way fewer faceplants though.

### Hashtag checklist

- [ ] Under the limit: Instagram — **max 5**
- [ ] You can explain each tag in one sentence about *this* post
- [ ] You've got niche/topic, not a wall of broad tags
- [ ] Broad — one max
- [ ] No `#follow4follow`, `#fyp`, `#like4like`, or other junk
- [ ] The set isn't a 1:1 copy of the last post
- [ ] Geo/format — only if it's truly on-topic
- [ ] Quick search glance: the tag is alive, doesn't look toxic

### Checklist next to tags (often more important)

- [ ] The caption has real words people search for
- [ ] For video: the key phrase is spoken / on screen early
- [ ] Preview and first second aren't “eh, you'll get it later”

### If you're unsure

> **Rule:** Drop the tag.
A short honest set > “I padded the five with whatever.”

> Save this checklist. Next courses cover profile and content — tags alone still won't carry you.

**Check yourself:** What should you do if you're unsure about one of five tags?

1. Keep it — maybe it works
2. Remove it; better 4 precise than 5 with junk
3. Swap it for `#viral`
4. Duplicate the broadest tag twice

Explanation: The limit is 5 — you don't need a “fill every slot” quota. A shaky tag hurts more often than it helps.
